Abstract

Raymond Williams was critical of psychoanalysis and engaged inadequately with feminism. In this paper, I look at the implications of these two blindspots in Williams’s work. Examining his response to Carolyn Steedman’s Landscape for a Good Woman, a text which engages psychoanalysis and feminism, I explore the lineaments of his resistances and what they tell us about the limitations but also the possibilities of his work. Looking at psychoanalytic and feminist responses to his work, I clear the ground for an exploration of both Williams’s own life and his work that an engagement with psychoanalysis and feminism affords.
